EPS vs AI: Which Vector Format is Better

Compare EPS and AI formats for professional design work. Learn the differences, compatibility, print workflows, and when to use each Adobe format.

EPS and AI are both Adobe formats used in professional design and print workflows. EPS is an interchange format designed for maximum compatibility; AI is Illustrator's native format designed for editability and feature preservation.

What each format stores

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a PostScript file that describes paths, text, and raster images. It is resolution-independent and widely supported by page layout software, print RIPs, and older design tools. AI (Adobe Illustrator) is a proprietary format that stores the full editing state: layers, symbols, brushes, effects, appearance attributes, and embedded assets.

Editability differences

AI files preserve everything: live effects, editable text, symbol instances, graphic styles, and artboards. You can reopen an AI file years later with full editability. EPS flattens most features — effects become rasterized or converted to paths. What you gain is compatibility; what you lose is easy editability.

Compatibility across software

EPS opens in Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, Affinity Publisher, Microsoft Word (Windows), and most print tools. AI files open reliably only in Adobe Illustrator and partially in Affinity Designer and CorelDRAW. If your recipient does not have Illustrator, send EPS or convert to PDF.

EPS is the traditional prepress format. It embeds fonts, declares color spaces explicitly, and works with RIPs dating back decades. AI works in modern prepress but is less universal. For offset, screen, or flexography printing, ask the printer which format they prefer.

File size considerations

AI files are often smaller than equivalent EPS when both contain raster images or complex effects. EPS must embed rasters as uncompressed or JPEG-compressed data. For pure vector artwork, the difference is negligible. Neither format is particularly efficient compared to optimized SVG for simple graphics.

Text and font handling

AI files store live text with full font formatting. If the recipient has the same font, text remains editable. EPS can embed font subsets or outline text to paths. Outlining guarantees identical appearance everywhere but makes text unsearchable and uneditable.

Transparency and effects

Illustrator's transparency and live effects are stored natively in AI. In EPS, they must be flattened at export because PostScript Level 2 does not support transparency. Modern print workflows using PDF/X handle transparency natively.

Color modes and spot colors

Both formats support RGB, CMYK, and spot colors. EPS has a long history in spot color workflows. AI handles spot colors identically but may require the recipient to have the same swatch libraries. For Pantone or custom inks, verify that the recipient's software reads spot definitions correctly. See our color separation guide.

When to use AI

  • Saving work in progress: logos, illustrations, templates
  • Files that will be edited again
  • Projects using symbols, brushes, or live effects
  • Internal studio workflows where everyone has Adobe software
  • Archiving source files with full editability

When to use EPS

  • Delivering final artwork to print shops or clients
  • Ensuring compatibility with non-Adobe software
  • Spot color jobs for prepress verification
  • Legacy workflows requiring EPS
  • Embedding in page layout applications

Practical workflow recommendations

Keep working files as AI. Use layers, symbols, and live text freely. When delivering final artwork, export EPS with text outlined and transparency flattened. Provide both formats if the recipient might need minor edits, but make clear which is the source and which is deliverable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert AI to EPS without losing quality?

You will not lose geometric quality, but you will lose editability. Transparency and effects are flattened, text may be outlined. Use our AI to EPS converter for batch conversion.

Why does my EPS file look pixelated?

The application is showing the low-resolution preview embedded in the EPS, not the vector content. Open in Illustrator or a PostScript-aware viewer to see true quality.

Can Inkscape open AI files?

Inkscape can import AI files saved in legacy formats (Illustrator 8/9), but newer AI files may not import reliably. Convert to SVG first.

Is EPS outdated?

EPS is mature, not outdated. Still widely used in print production. However, PDF has largely replaced EPS for most purposes with better compression, transparency support, and metadata.

Which format should I send to a print shop?

Ask the shop. Many prefer EPS for spot color work; others prefer PDF. If unspecified, send PDF/X-4 with fonts embedded and spot colors preserved.

Can I embed EPS in Microsoft Word?

On Windows, yes; on Mac, Word does not reliably render EPS. Use PNG or PDF instead for cross-platform documents.

How do I reduce EPS file size?

Export with JPEG compression for embedded rasters, reduce preview resolution, and simplify paths before export. For large files, consider PDF which compresses more efficiently.
